3-D Modeling and Animation
ETC Course: Building Virtual Worlds
August-December 2008
The Course and My Contribution
The Building Virtual Worlds course is taught at the Entertainment Technology Center at CMU as part of the immersion semester for first year graduate students. It is focused on using multidisciplinary teams to create virtual worlds in two weeks. The course is structured to force efficient teamwork and communications between artists and engineers to create meaningful experiences. During the course I contributed as a sound designer (adding sound effects and music), a 3D modeler (using 3D Studio Max to model assets), and a producer for the team (structuring meetings and helping communication). The course was divided into five rounds, and the two examples here were worlds I helped model and animate.
Round 4: QuadCorp
QuadCorp was the most successful virtual world I worked on during the course. It was selected for the BVW show, a collection of the finest worlds from the class which are showcased at the end of the term. Quadcorp was created by Camilo Garcia-Vega, Francisco Souki, Matt McLean and myself. I was responsible for environment modeling (not texturing) and worked on the majority of audio. Creating audio and a "voice" for the robots was extremely difficult. Without using words I had to create audio communication that could convey emotion but not break the reality based upon these industrial robots.
